Preparing food for your horse in advance or not a good idea?
In principle, the owner of the horse ensures that he already prepares the food for his horse. But some horses - in addition to their normal food - also receive supplements or vitamins. Normal food can be prepared well in advance, but does this also apply to the supplements? In the blog post below, there is more information about whether or not to prepare the food for your horse. What should you and what should you not take into account?
Do the supplements stay good?
Most supplements must be stored in a dry, cool, and dark place according to regulations. This is to ensure that the quality and effectiveness of the supplements do not deteriorate. When you mix supplements in the food and give the food directly, the food does not affect the supplements. However, if you leave the supplements in the food for more than an hour or even a day, the quality of the supplements will (partially) decrease and this will affect the effect of the supplements. This certainly does not apply to all types of supplements, but it is worth checking that and then acting on it.
Can the supplements be prepared?
When the supplements are prepared a day in advance (and are not opened or premixed), it will not hurt most supplements. It is only important that the supplements only come into contact with the wet food at the last moment. Incidentally, it does not apply to all supplements that they can be prepared a day in advance, because some are sensitive to exposure to, for example, oxygen, heat or daylight and can therefore not be prepared earlier.
The following ingredients are sensitive to this, so supplements containing those ingredients cannot be prepared in advance.
- Vitamin E: this vitamin should not be exposed to oxygen
- Vitamin C: This vitamin should not be exposed to oxygen
- Vitamin A: this vitamin should not be exposed to heat
- Vitamin B2: these vitamins should not be exposed to heat
- Sand cures: this product is sensitive to moisture
- Clay: clay is also sensitive to moisture
It is better not to prepare the following products because the effect may become less:
Vitamin ESL, Sand off products, Intestine products with montmorillonite clay
How can you best prepare the food?
Put the food somewhere closed, in the dark (at least not in the sun) and if you already want to mix the supplements, sprinkle them over and not through!
